about the site

I created this website to share the resources I developed during my 2010 beekeeping 4-H project. I realized that my background resulted in an atypical approach to the area, and I wanted save other people the elbow grease I put into collecting and organizing reams of information in charts, graphs, and maps.

In summary, this website serves

  • to promote a scientific approach to a historically unscientific area.
  • to share knowledge in concise, helpful, and useful formats.
  • to motivate the author to continue to learn and write about beekeeping.

While a website is ideal for sharing some kinds of resources, others more properly belong in a format organized by time. To that end, this website is accompanied by a blog, theviewfromthehive.blog.com where I share management strategies, plants blooming in my area, recently published scientific journal articles, and media.

about the author
Experience in beekeeping: I started my first beehive in spring 2009 and competed in 4-H (an international youth development organization that focuses on teaching by doing). To my surprise, my project won the state competition! In summer 2010, I competed again and again finished in the top three statewide.

Experience with statistics and science: actually, I'm just a recent high school grad who finds mathematical descriptions of scientific observations deeply satisfying. Both of my parents have backgrounds in science, so at least I come by it honestly.

Experience writing: when the writing bug first bit me, I was nine years old; I wrote a story about my dog. I enjoy writing essays, stories, poetry, and--of course--web content.

Future plans: This fall, I plan to major in piano performance and minor in physics. Sometime in the next four years, I'll have to decide whether to pursue a graduate degree in piano (I'm especially interested in its collaborative aspects) or go to law school instead.
